my real estate agent said he might sell my home himself rather than through the parent corp. Is this bad?

I’m interviewing a guy and he is with a big name real estate company, but said about 20% of the time he sales the home acting as his own representative. Is this common or an indicator of a poor ethical decision?

Found a place I want, the sellers agent showed it to me, decided to make an offer and called my agent. The sellers agent than called back and said he won’t take an offer from an agent other than himself. He works for a large real estate company. Is this legal? I’m not comfortable with it – it sounds fishy! This occurred just outside Vancouver, BC.
