Some DIY home repair questions (including sewing couch cushions, and end tables renovation)?

Howdy,

So… the questions are…

1) I have a couch that is fine, but ugly as shit. Do you think it’d be possible to just re-sew and assemble the “cushy parts” keeping the old frame? I really like “DIY” renovations, and I think it’d be a kind of cool, inexpensive way to personalize my home, you know? If it’s possible, do you know where I could maybe find a template or some other guideline for this?

2) I also want to do some other renovations, including re-vamping my end tables (and depending on how it goes some other tables). Anyway, they are made of… “particle board”, I believe, with a fake wood finish. So how would I change it to, for example, a black “wood” finish. Could I sand off the old cover and just buy a new “fake ________ wood” cover and stick it on, or should I just find one and stick it on over that, or paint it on, or what?

If you could help me with these two things I’ll be SO grateful. I really want to “rejazz” my apartment, but I don’t have a lot of money right now so I thought this might be a cool, cheap way to do that. :) Thanks!
